Email to families - April 3, 2020

Message to school community April 3, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We hope you are all making out ok and continue to be safe and healthy. These are extraordinary times and as a school staff we are hoping that everyone is keeping well-being at the top of their lists. During the past two weeks, staff have been planning and communicating to determine how we will most effectively action the Covid-19 Guidelines for Teachers.

It was decided that, in order to limit the possibly overwhelming amount of information going out, classroom teachers would make first contact with families. That took place this week. The initial contact was to see how everyone was doing, verify contact information and determine access to technology. If you have not yet responded to your child’s teacher’s email, please do so as soon as you are able.

Teachers have now begun working in grade level partnerships to create common home learning activities for students at each level. Teachers will plan for ten hours of activities for students to complete during a two-week block. Home learning activities will focus on math and literacy. Please know that it is ok for students to repeat favourite activities as repetition is key to strong skill building.

The first set of learning activities will be distributed on Wednesday, April 8th by noon and then every two weeks on Wednesdays going forward for the duration of the school closure.

We do have some classes at IFES that have been using Google Classroom before the school closure and, depending on what each teachers decides, these teachers may continue to use Google Classroom to share learning activities. Other teachers will be emailing the learning activities to families.

If your child’s class was using Google Classroom in the past, you may consider getting them to log on to GNSPES and exploring their Google Classroom. If they need their username or password, you can email your child’s teacher directly for that information.

Steps for logging on to gnspes:
1. www.gnspes.ca
2. Log in with gnspes email and password
3. Click Classroom icon in your Google Drive
4. Select your classroom from this year

* If you are using a handheld device in place of a computer, you can also download Google Drive and Google Classroom Apps.

General grade level learning activities for P-9 are being created by the HRCE. Those activities will be distributed every two weeks via the SaltWire flyer delivery network. If you would like to receive these activities and are not already receiving weekly flyers, please call 902-486-3031 or visit  https://heraldwebmaster.survey.fm/nova-scotia-at-home-learning-packages to register. There is a two week turn-around time to register for flyers, so you may not receive the first flyer delivery if you are not already registered.

The HRCE and EECD websites also contain helpful information.

If you have any questions related to curriculum, please contact your child’s teacher directly. All staff email addresses are located in the Staff Directory on our school web page. https://ifs.hrce.ca/staff-directory Other questions can be directed to school admin (Ms. Yerxa or Ms. Mitchell). If you do not have access to email, please call the main school line and leave a message. 902-435-8435

We still do not have a distribution date for report cards. As that information becomes available, we will let you know.

These are truly unprecedented times and we will all need to be flexible as we work through them. Teachers are focusing on developing meaningful activities that are not simply time-fillers. On the other hand, we realize that every family has their own unique situation. The learning activities teachers create are not meant to stress or overwhelm families. Please have your child complete the amount that works for your family. Well-being, including safety and physical/mental health need to be the priority. Please reach out if there is anything you need to communicate with us.

As Ms. Doucette so eloquently put, “… keep talking, reading, playing and spending time together. So much learning happens through everyday experiences. Take care of each other and if you have any questions or concerns please reach out to us. We all would be happy to hear from you!”

In closing, please take the time to enjoy a video of well wishes from our staff https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwgR5r4blXY

Please let your children know that we are missing all of them so much and looking forward to seeing everyone back at Ian Forsyth Elementary when it is safe to do so.

Warmest regards,
Angela Yerxa-Weeks
